Growing up by the English coast made the sea feel like everything: salt on your lips, a packet of vinegary crisps, and the restorative power of a sunny afternoon. I still remember my mother’s beach picnics and weekend visits to my grandparents, who always sat on the same bench at the end of the promenade, ready with “ice cream money.” My grandfather would slip an extra few pounds into my hand with a conspiratorial grin.
On special days we’d pack windbreakers, sandwiches and sunscreen and drive down to West Wittering, a broad sweep of sand on the Manhood Peninsula at the mouth of Chichester Harbour. Stretching for roughly half a mile, it’s an easy escape from London and, to my eye, holds its own against Cape Cod or the Hamptons: wide, windswept and quietly elegant.
The shoreline is backed by dunes and dotted with colourful beach huts. East Head’s dune system is prized for wildlife and wildflowers; birdwatchers come for dark-bellied brent geese that arrive from Arctic Siberia and the calls of curlews, redshanks and oystercatchers. Tiny sanderlings scuttle along the tide line, white and quick, while waders probe the wet sand.
West Wittering is very dog-friendly and a magnet for surfers and watersports fans. Offshore breezes mean reliable wind and surf; you’ll see kite-surfers, wind-surfers and paddle-boarders carving the water, and on a clear day the Isle of Wight sits across the Solent. For safety, stick to the marked zones. Barbecues are allowed if they’re portable or reusable—disposable grills are banned—and there are camping facilities nearby if you want to make a weekend of it.
The village itself is compact and charming, with attractive houses and lanes that hint at New England’s coastal architecture. A short drive brings you to Chichester, with its Roman and Anglo-Saxon remains and a striking cathedral at the centre. Nearby Bosham and Emsworth offer harbourside cafés, cream teas and summertime food festivals, while Hayling Island provides arcades, fairground rides and a splash of seaside nostalgia—sometimes even a celebrity sighting.
Whether for a day trip or a relaxed weekend, West Wittering is a singular slice of the British coast: easy, breezy and quietly memorable.
